Theoretical approaches for geometric optimization of urban forms : towards a fractal development of the city

This thesis aims to establish a urban structure that optimizes inhabitant's preferences. In other words, we want to find out which city shape answers the best the residents' aspirations, according to their consumption preferences for urban and green amenities. By considering a theoretical field of study and by characterizing the population by a Cobb-Douglas behavioral pattern, we will build step by step a city, assuming successive arrivais of new individuals, in order to find out which geometric shape gives the most suitable answer. An exact solution for the one-dimensional kinetics of the diffusion-controlled reaction A+B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B is obtained by means of the three-particle correlation functions. Because of a lattice discreteness each site could be occupied by a single particle only which leads to the so-called ``bus effect'': Recombination of any particle A is defined by a spatial configuration of two nearest particles B only surrounding A from its left and right. This results in the unusual algebraic decay law, n(t)\ensuremath{\propto}${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, which asymptotically (as t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}) does not depend on the trap B concentration.

The question to be addressed here is that of the agglomeration/dispersion forces that are likely to account for the location of people and jobs in rural areas and the way they explain spatial patterns in rural areas depending on urban influence. Economic geography models may provide suitable tools with which to investigate the organization of rural areas.
